Port of Lies Quotes【Text Only】
Ep1
That’s how our legal system works. Some are stupid enough to be scammed out of millions. But the judge won’t believe some are stupid enough to be used as a money mule for thousands only. So, for stupidity, there are two standards.
The procedure is boring, but the people are interesting. All kinds of people, a variety of weird stories.
Criminal defending 102: A right enquiry is more powerful than the law.
You have your worries today, but you’ll have more tomorrow. If you turn today’s worries into tomorrow’s, you won’t have any today. Isn’t it amazing?
Ep2
The human rights concern minority, not majority.
It’s limiting a judge’s power when you can only acquit someone, which can easily be dubious. If you can’t convince yourself by the death penalty or acquitting someone, just convict the person but find a reason to get commutation, which is the safest and securest way. It’s called human nature.
Once you tell someone about your religion, it’s not pure anymore.
Ep3

Defence 103: The law is not about being “only fair”.
When we die, we have nothing, so we must strive for the living.
I don’t serve you, I serve the law.
“I don’t need to commit murder to find out it is wrong.”
“But only when you sit here can you understand the meaning of death. This is not politics. Politics is compromise. Compromising is the easiest. You just have to keep repeating the same patterns. It does not have an end. I do not want the same results. I want to stop meaningless killing. I want everything to end.”
Ep6
Taking personal feelings to a trial is the most dangerous thing.
The death penalty isn’t difficult at all. What is difficult is believing there is an end to pain, somehow, in this world.
In judiciary, truth is the most precious. Truth is justice.
Do you want to hear a joke?
At a hearing once, the defendant was late. The judge suggested a joke competition. The prosecutor and lawyer agreed. The judge went first. He said, “Presumption of innocence”. The prosecutor went next, “Investigation secrecy”. Then the lawyer said “Lawyer ethics”. Just when everyone thought their jokes were genius, guess what happened? The defendant ran into court, yelling at the judge, “Your Honour, I’m innocent.”
If a life for a life is unjust neither is forgiving one without repentance.
The death sentence might not be the answer, but it could be a possibility.
Only weaklings depend on luck.
I am not saying that murder is not wrong. But in this court, in Taiwans’ administration of justice, the death penalty is a question of luck!

How can human rights depend on a referendum? Right of life is about the constitution instead of the public opinion.
70% of citizens lack faith in our judicial system. 75% believe that the law protects the rich and the powerful. Almost 80% believe poor people have greater risk of getting the death penalty. But 85% support keeping the death penalty.
From the judicial perspective, to make a trustworthy judgement is the first priority. Don’t you agree? If they can’t trust the participants, it doesn’t matter how just the final statement is, it’s difficult to persuade the public.
If throughout the process, we are only trying to please the judge, how can you not doubt his fairness?
Judgement exists for the defendant, not for the judge or the victim. Not for God.
Ep8
As long as you give the public what they want, no one will remember what they deserve.
Things you want to change are within the system. Revolt is not about refusing to cooperate but refusing to assimilate.
The real evil is mediocrity. It’s those who believe they can stay out of it. It’s those who refuse to let go for the sake of justice. You said we should pursue crimes according to the law, but the Constitutional Court doesn’t want to declare the death penalty unconstitutional at all. Is the right to life really supreme? Law is the result of balance and compromise, isn’t it?
Not killing won’t stop more killing. If we must kill, the timing must be perfect.
