Many firefighters don’t talk about their trauma. It gets worse with time. If they can’t get over it, some may even have suicidal thoughts.
If everything we do is just to impress the public, then we can just put on an act.

As a firefighter’s wife, I must be strong and independent.” But I’m human too. There are times when I need your help too. Why do you make me feel like I’m the only one caring for this family? All you can say is “I’m sorry” ?
“All you do is complain. Does complaining change anything? If you’re that pissed off, why don’t you quit?”
“Don’t you ever complain? It’s fine for you to swear and complain. When I complain, it’s intolerable! You always have a problem with this and that. Why did you stay at this job?"

Every time I visit the parents of our fallen brothers, they always tell me this, they hope that their child will be the last firefighter to die on the job. But do you know what? How many times have we heard those same words?
The number of firefighters who have died on the job over the past ten years in Taiwan far exceed the total in Hong Kong over the last 90 years! Every time an investigation report comes out, it’s always the same. Fire conditions change quickly. The firefighters was insufficiently trained, or they way it was an accident! Is this fair?
They always criticise the lower ranks. They say we are the problem. The buildings are the problem. But the chain of command is never the problem! How can this prevent the next tragedy from happening? It’s structural murder!
If you save one person today, he may be able to help five people. And these five people can help more people afterward. Then the world will be a different place.

In the face of death, we are all equal. Whether the person is good or bad, an enemy or friend, as long as he wants to live, even if there’s a only a small chance, we should save him right?
Let’s ask ourselves, why are we firefighters? Every day, we face life and death. We saves lives from the fires. We deal with the injustice of the system. We deal with unreasonable people who don’t understand us and their sarcasm, for what? To make a living? To provide for our family? I admit it, that’s how I am.
How about you, Kuan-chung? Why did you become a firefighter? Because we can save people? Because it's cool? Because it makes us heroes like Iron Man or Batman? What about you Chia-hsuan? Why are you a firefighter? Because you’re strong? Because you were on the swimming team? What about you, Hsiao-kao? Because you have to take care of your siblings, is that so?
No. I’m sure that’s not all. There must be something buried in our hearts, like a seed. That’s out calling as firemen. Our mission. Our glory. It’s what Yi-yang always insisted on.
Yi-yang left us, we’re all saddened by that. But the only thing we can do is to keep our spirits up. Recover our original passion. Do our parts as firefighters, okay?
When we’re in fire scenes, we could be in danger at any time. Be it firefighting tactics, or our mentality, we have to be stronger than anyone else.
If the one saving lives ends up having to be rescued, that’s the worst dereliction of duty as a firefighter.
You’re a good firefighter. If you can’t come to terms with your issues, you won’t be able to save anyone.
If I die trying to save someone one day, please forget the tragic state I was when I died. It’s because I died bravely, that’s really cool. There’s nothing more worthwhile. The important thing is, I love you. Please go on living. I believe we’ll meet again in a better place.
I know this is not easy, but that's what I want to do.
